The meaning of this Invalides is more like invalid or chronically sick or disabled person. One of the Napoleans established it for veterans, so it is or was France's VA.
I met two US women on the train from Versailles who called it the Invalid, meaning not valid. Difference in emphasis. Pretty georgeous building though.
