Garbage

It took me a few days to figure out what to do with the garbage, but I was delighted when I did figure it out. At the end of every street there are these bins. Three for recycling: plastic, paper, and glass. The other two are for garbage and compost. Besides the household stuff, one can get rid of bottles or apple cores or whatever when one is walking around the city.

More Barcelona Buildings

I was headed to the body shop for lotion and conditioner when I spotted the name on this building-another of Barcelona's noted architects. He did the castle like building next to the Casa Batllo.

Apparently designed this one in 1917.

Perhaps it's because I'm an American, but naming a street the Passage of Conception seems like not such a good idea. Vagina Way??

This is the entrance way to our apartment building. Rather simple, but we do love the lift.

Mercat on La Rambla-very busy and lovely food. I got some taziki at the Greek stall and it was kick butt. Fun to walk through-plenty of tripe and whole skinned rabbits and goat heads all skinned and ready for the pot. I also bought two peaches just because they smelled so good as I walked by. Also, the Spanish word for peach was in my vocabulary, so why not make good use of it. It's so euphonic-melacaton.

SF-Schoolhouse

Just outside the cathedral is the little terracotta schoolhouse that Gaudi designed. Why it is here I'm not sure, but it was to serve as a prototype for villiage schools. He also lived in it when he was working on the cathedral-to be close to the project. You saw the model in the house in Park Guell.

His workspace-I particularly like the chair.

This is the tower I was in. There is a lift in the entrance that takes you up in the tower.

SF-Inside-Chapel

There is one little chapel in the cathedral-just inside the "birth" entrance. It is also where the lift for one of the towers is, so it's not such a quiet meditative place.




And this little area has been devoted to Gaudi's drawings exploring various structural forms in nature.

SF-Inside-Stained Glass Windows

Though they are quite georgous, there are few stained glass windows in this cathedral. Most of the windows let in as much light as possible and the stained glass has a darkening effect. Traditionally the stained glass windows told Bible stories-most people were illiterate and the Bible was in Latin and for the clergy only-one of Martin Luther's objections.

Gaudi puts the stories on the outside of the cathedral and the simplicity of the inner cathedral leaves the spirit space to soar.
