The women who lived in this cloister would have been the "excess" daughters of the wealthy. They would have been supported by generous contributions from their families, and these colunmns would have been bought and carved to the specifications of the families of the women.

This information made me look at the cloister in a different way. The walls could be seen as protection from the outside world for unmarried women-a community of women.
