Old Sarnum

Here is how it is depicted in the diorama in the Salisbury Cathedral. Old Sarnum was the site of the original town, but it was plagued with troubles not the least of which was lack of water, so they moved it to the present site, Salisbury.

Here is the entrance.

Marcia will have to tell you more about what it was made of. All I know is limestone and chert. There are great big chunks of rock in it that might be sold in rock shops.

I even saw some of this in houses nearby.

Much of the castle cannot be easily identified, so I have included the little signs that describe it.

Here is the moat.

This is pretty much it. I will include the signs and the photos of what is left, but don't assume that the signs correspond with the photos.

Steps leading to nowhere, or over the edge.

This one I know to be the privy.

And this is the back entrance. You can see the outline of the cathedral.

And here is a little closer look at the footprint of the cathedral.

This is my first 13th century castle and cathedral. My mind is still stretching to get to the 13th century. However, all of my reading of British history is beginning to take shape.
