Panoramic View Budapest

If this is your first visit to Budapest, let's get you oriented. Click on the photo and scroll.

The river is the Danube, know in Europe as Duna (after the goddess Diana). On the left of the river is Buda. The photo is taken from the Buda side. We'll visit that site close up in the next blog entry.

On the right of the Duna is Pest. These were two seperate cities for ages. The Chain Bridge (Szechenyi Lanchid) was built in 1849-the first dry link between the two cities and the inevitable happened-they became one city. The Chain bridge is in the foreground.

On the far left of this photo you see the dome of the Palace-formerly belonging to Maria Teresa and Franz Joseph, the Hapsburgs who ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is now home to an extensive National Gallery and Library. The president's residence is next door (the prime minister is more important) and the towers beyond the Palace are St Mathias church which is in fisherman's bastion. We will visit all these places.

The bridge beyond the Chain Bridge is St Margaret's bridge. It goes to St Margarets Island. We didn't, but we will next trip. There is a lovely park there and a monestary. If you continue across the St Margaret's bridge, it will take you to our neighborhood on the Pest side. You will go past Nyugati train station and make a few turns to get to Weiner Leo Ut where we lived.

Between the two bridges on the Pest side is Parliament. You can't miss it in the photo.

On the far right of the photo is a tall dome and two towers. That's St. Istivan's Basillica.
