San Marco

Probably the place that most often comes to mind when one thinks of Venice is San Marco square. In addition to the big open square, there is the cathedral, the tower, the Doge's palace, and lots of high end shops tucked into the arches all around the square.

I loved this marble patchwork just outside one of the entrances to the Doge's palace.

Because it is so spectacular, and the place everyone thinks of when they think of Venice, it is quite crowded. Maybe some day I will be willing to stand in crowds to see the inside of the palace, or get the pannoramic view of the city from the top of the tower, but this trip wasn't the time. There is plenty of charm to go around in Venice, so I decided to go around and see it sans crowd.
